Cada año, la Universidad Jiaotong, en Shanghái, actualiza su lista de las 500 mejores universidades del mundo en base a unos criterios cuantificables como el número de galardonados con el Nobel, el número de investigadores altamente citados o el número de artículos publicados en Science y Nature.
Cada año, las mismas diez universidades se reparten los primeros puestos. Son algunas de las instituciones más prestigiosas e influyentes del mundo, como la Universidad de Harvard (que mantiene el primer puesto desde que empezó a publicarse la clasificación, en el año 2003) o el MIT.
